Melbourne Day 3

 DAY 3

TUESDAY: Alexander McQueen and The Royal Botanic Gardens

Outfit for the McQueen exhibition. Blouse from Dangerfield, necklace from Gifts of Mercy Jewelry

Jon's outfit. Tie and jacket opshopped.

More street art

A clock made of flowers across from the gallery.

On Tuesday morning, we went to see the Alexander McQueen Exhibition at the NGV. We probably should have waited until later in the day as it was packed, but we managed. It was an amazing and inspiring exhibition.

This collection was inspired by classic art of Heaven and Hell

It was hard to photograph with the lighting but some of the fabric was printed with images from paintings.

Elaborate metallic embroidery

The MC Escher inspired dress was one of our favourites

This jacket combines Saville Row tailoring and harnesses. Another thing that has probably trickled down into modern fashion but was pioneered by daring designers like McQueen.

There were some amazing shoes in the collections. I couldn't walk in any of them, but I appreciate them!

This tailcoat was a dream item!

Stunning fern lace

Breathtaking draping

The tailoring was exquisite

Incorporating suiting into dresses

A headpiece from one of the shows

It was wonderful seeing some of the historical inspirations. The exhibition displayed some actual historical garments that inspired his designs alongside.

Stunning Edwardian gown alongside some McQueen pieces!

I love these boots that looked like shoes with straps over tights.

A Morris & Co weaving!

McQueen was inspired by slashed doublets and made some wonderful pieces of his own!

Rosary details on the shoulders

Another beautifully preserved historical gown

An old daguerrotype reproduced in sewuins.

The Salem gowns were stunning but it was nearly impossible to photograph them in the dark, neon lit room!

The hair motif was beautiful.

The Eastern textiles in these gowns were gorgeous:

Toreador inspired fashion:

I really want this sculpture!

The silhouette of this outfit was stunning!

I love how the outfits are reflected by the mirrors above them!

If you haven't seem They Shoot Horses Don't They? this is your sign to see it!

McQueen watch strap sandals

We see a lot of digitally printed dresses these days, but I think these were the originals. the patterns are elaborate and perfectly matched to the lines of the gown.

I liked the hardware on these shoes.

Afterwards we walked around the Royal Botanic Gardens.

I especially liked the mossy little stone bridge. It felt like a private grotto even though millions of people have walked through there since the gardens were planted.

It rained lightly during our trip but it wasn't too bad.

We went by the war memorial but we were too tired to go up all the steps!

We got a tram and train back to the hotel and rested for a bit, we were very tired.

We went back to Fitzroy for dinner at Red Sparrow Pizza. They are an amazing vegan place!

The décor

BBQ vegan wings- very realistic!

Delicious woodfired sourdough pizza! This one was the Ortolana (nothing to do with the bird people eat). It was the best pizza I have ever had.

This one was the Bianca. I am not really a fan of white sauce pizzas, but if you are, you would enjoy it.

The door handle. I would absolutely love one like this!

A poem on a post.

We went and saw the Queer mural on the side of Evie's Disco Diner.

Some beatuiful windows in Fitzroy:

I loved this mural. I am not sure where this was as we headed back towards the city.

A beautiful old post.

This old building looked very welcoming.

Art for sale in a window near where we were staying.

We headed back to central Melbourne. I got a little peach emoji from a Gacha machine at the supermarket.

We went to San Churro. We got chocolate and fruit for two and a Spanish hot chocolate for Jon. Then we headed back to our hotel.

  1. Wow, you packed a lot into one day! That Alexander McQueen exhibit was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see -- amazing! I hate how the modern trend is to have museums and exhibitions so darkly lit. I can't see a damn thing and I certainly can't read any little placards or signs in them.
