Day 1
SUNDAY: St Kilda
On the afternoon of Sunday 19th March, we arrived in Melbourne by Skybus (the bus from the airport). We left our things at the hotel and took the tram to St Kilda at around 3.00 to see the Esplanade Markets.
We got a couple of vegan momos, a kind of dumpling from a stall called something like Mama Momos.
Jon got a beef skewer from Hanoi Street Food.
We also saw a stall that sold hotdogs and ugly face mugs but didn't get anything from it.
We headed to Luna Park. it was late in the afternoon and getting cold so we just got the $15 tickets for entry and one ride.
It was cool seeing all the Vintage art, everything was very different from Sydney Luna Park. All the rides and art were different.
We waited about 45 minutes in line to get on the old ghost train. It has been around since 1934 and is apparently one of the oldest remaining dark rides in the world.
The train carriages are tiny and barely fit two people!
This carousel was manufactured in 1913 and contains an organ made in 1909. I would have loved to ride it but we only had one set of ride tickets.
DAY 2
MONDAY: Carlton and Fitzroy
The next morning we got a tram out to the Melbourne Museum in Carlton. We also wanted to go to the Royal Exhibition Building but it seemed to be closed to set up for a flower show.
The Royal Exhibition Building is World Heritage Listed. It was built from 1879 to 1880. We will hopefully see inside next time we got to Melbourne.
This is the natural form of the crystals but it looks like someone just stuck them on there!
Unusual rocks including a natural "8"
So many colours of beetle! The blue ones were my favourite!
I got emotionally attached to this lungfish
A very large model train! (It never actually worked)
A huge piece of fossilised wood!
There was an amazing garden in its own area of the museum. It featured bushland with living animals!
Can you see the frog?
Little native birds running around, I think these ones might be flightless.
They camouflage with the environment.
Some other native birds.
One of the lizards was an amazing yellow colour!
After that we went to Fitzroy to check out the opshops. There are four main ones and we got to three of them. The large Salvos was the best, it had amazing prices. The Sacred Heart and Red Cross had rather high prices. We also went to a Dangerfield where I got a top you will see in a later post. We got coffee and a green juice at a café called Pavlov's Duck.
Some beautiful ironwork
Street art
This rabbit was almost human sized!
"Feed me!"
Beautiful old building.
We went back to the area we were staying in and had a picnic in the nearby Flagstaff gardens. We had grapes, chocolate and strawberries.
There were miniature daisies (Belliums) everywhere in the grass
A beautiful old terrace house
One of the old trams.
We walked to a vegan Thai restaurant called Madame K's for dinner. It was amazing!
Thai iced tea
Lamb Sliders: vegan caramelised lamb sliders with roti bread and crushed cashew nut. These were actually wrapped in the roti and so amazing and delicious. This was the first one I ever had and I am obsessed! Unfortunately, like most vegan versions of things, it would be hard to perfectly re-create!
Madame K's Pancake: sliced roasted wheat protein duck, with cucumber, shallots and fresh coriander wrapped in a a thin pancake and drizzled with special sauce
Stir fried mushrooms with basil: Stir fried assorted mushrooms and eggplant with aromatic Thai basil and garlic served with jasmine or brown rice. The basil really adds flavour!
Jon had the Red duck Curry: wheat protein duck with coconut cream, lychee, tomatoes, pineapple, carrot and peas.
Looks like a fun trip! I like how the geodes in the museum are giving you bunny ears!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved tagging along with you on days 1 and 2 of your trip to Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteThe vintage rides at the Luna Park are amazing and the Melbourne Museum sounds right up my street! xxx
